What do you think of when someone says "Tenor Saxophone"?
I'll tell you what I think of: Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Sonny Stitt, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Don Byas, Stanley Turrentine, King Curtis, Junior Walker, Mike Brecker, Bob Berg, Jerry Bergonzi, Dave Liebman, Steve Grossman, Bob Mintzer, and so many other names I don't even have time to type them.
Since 1938, when Coleman Hawkins had a hit record with "Body and Soul," the tenor has been the King of saxophones, and that's as true today as it ever was. When I was a kid, a tenorist named Bill Milligan told me that "If you want to work in this town, get a tenor, kid." I did. And I worked. Now it's your turn!
